Travel Challenge: The Chic Late Summer Getaway

The George at St Julian's Bay

We’ve got a budget of £1000 for a September Mediterranean break. We’d like to stay in a contemporary, boutique-style hotel but we realise our price range is limiting. We’ve been to Turkey, the Greek Islands, Cyprus and the Balearics before and want to try somewhere new. We love nightlife, but don’t want to find ourselves in the middle of an 18-30s-style resort. We’ve got the last week of September off work, and we want to go somewhere that will still be warm and sunny.  There are two of us, we want to go away for a week and we can travel from any London airport – Adam.

We think you should try Malta. The weather will still be good in September and the hotel we have found for you is in St Julian’s Bay. This bustling harbour town is a vibrant tourist hub. During the day, enjoy boat trips and watersports and in the evening, experience the legendary Paceville (pronounced ‘patchy-ville’) nightlife, with its great choice of bars and restaurants.  Fashionable and fun, St Julian’s is a tourist hotspot for international visitors as well as the Maltese. There are cheesy nightclubs here, but the amience along the promenade after dark is more sophisticated than that of the infamous ‘young and lively’ resorts you refer to. It’s not really a beach resort, but the flat rock bed at the edge of the sea is a good place to sunbathe and swim. There’s also a good local lido, or you could laze by your hotel’s pool. Pack a camera and look out for the brightly-coloured local fishing boats, known as luzzu. The bus service in Malt is reliable and regular, making getting around the island easy and cheap. There are an abundance of historical sites to explore if that’s your kind of thing, or simply rlax and soak up the laid-back atmosphere in St Julian’s Bay.

The hotel we’ve found for you ticks all of your boxes: It’s cool and contemporary and comes well within your budget. The George opened its doors this June, so everything’s sleek and brand new. There’s a choice of indoor or outdoor rooftop pools, as well as a sauna, steam room and spa. The emphasis here is on style, with a pared-down chic and the’re big on ecology too; everything possible is recycled. The 112 fresh rooms and suites feature LCD TVs, step-in rain showers and designer toileteries. Breakfast is served until a party-friendly 11.00am and if you do decide to dine in in the evening, you can enjoy Mediterranean Tapas on the roof terrace. Located in the heart of hip Paceville, The George is the perfect place to stay for a chic late summer break.
